Where are the dictionaries located?

If you just want to look up a quick definition or check the spelling of an English word a copy of the Webster's Unabridged Dictionary is located on the dictionary stand near the information desk (across from the circulation desk near the glass wall.

We also have online subscription access to the OED - Oxford English Dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary The "the definitive record of the English language, featuring 600000 words, 3 million quotations, and over 1000 years of English." You can use the OED to look up the history of a word or phrase - instead of just seeing what a word/phrase means today, you can also see how the meaning of that word has changed over time. You can access the OED by clicking Databases A to Z under FIND IT on our homepage. Click the "O" to view the databases starting with "O" and then select Oxford English Dictionary from the list.

Other English languages dictionaries can be found in the reference section under PE1625-1629.

Online English language dictionaries can be accessed through the Virtual Reference Shelves.
